Yo Dick! Implement this

An on-going series of concepts and critiques to improve Twitter by Youssef Sarhan.

Character Count Colours

I feel the colours don’t accurately represent their values. It seems incongruent that an valid value has the same colour as an invalid value.

Keep Unposted Tweets—Now Implemented

Since the implementation of the latest Twitter UI, I can’t count the number of times I’ve composed a Tweet, clicked out to check something but when I come back to finish what I began, it’s gone. This is incredibly frustrating.

140 Character Limit

When posting a Tweet that exceeds 140 characters, it’s not immediately clear that it’s too long. The 140 character limit is special to Twitter, and as a long time user I expect more attention to be paid to this part of the experience. It feels like it’s taken for granted now. And as a new user, well this could be very confusing when not explained clearly.

On a related note, I am having difficulty accepting that the ‘darkened background’ model is in fact good for the user experience. It seems to be forcing a lot of cumbersome and stiff interactions; it’s not as fluid or as enjoyable as before.

Expand Tweet

Of all the changes made to the latest version of Twitter, this was the most difficult to rationalise and acclimatise to. Weeks on and I still find myself confused. While I understand the value of the Expand & Collapse concept, it feels strange that certain Tweets move around for no purpose.

For instance, when a Tweet is not a Reply nor does it have any Replies, Favorites or Retweets, then the tweet opens up slightly (when clicked) as if to display something that ultimately never loads. This 9px vertical shift caused by the expansion of a Tweet is an unnecessary and disorientating interaction. I feel the original idea has been lost in development. It feels unfinished and rough around the edges. My suggestion (above) may be a good solution.

Tweet Loader

It’s important that the user understands when Tweets are being fetched, thus the loader should be visible here.

Highlighting Text

It would be of greater value to users if they could interact with content as they normally expect to. Highlight, Cut and Paste —among others— is more valuable at this point that being able to maneuver the while box. Especially so, when you consider that the rest of the interface is technically disabled and focus is now on what’s happening at the forefront of the UI.

Latest Tweets Highlighted

After clicking the 4 New Tweets bar, all new Tweets are pushed down into your feed leaving you with no idea of where to begin reading. It would great if there was some sort of temporary indicator to highlight the new tweets.

Connect Notifications Glow

When new Tweets appear in your Following Tweet stream, a blue glow appears under the Home icon. However, it would be great if the same glow appeared under the Connect icon when new interactions were waiting for you.

Replying to oneself

Just as it is not possible to Retweet one’s own tweet, it would be similarly inconsequential to reply to oneself.
